Odour of Chrysanthemums

Read the text Odour of Chrysanthemums. Then answer the follwing questions:

Flowers are often heavily symbolical in Lawrence’s writing. In this story the chrysanthemums recur several times and in different ways. What meaning is conveyed through the chrysanthemums, and what do they come to symbolize? After you have read the article, think about whether you agree with Volker Schulz’s interpretation of how this particular symbol is used at the end of the story.
One impressive feature of this story is how Lawrence manages to conjure up a whole world in just a few pages. What do we find out about the mining community and the characters that is not explained straight out in the text? Give some examples of instances when a great deal of information about the place or the characters, their histories and personalities, is given through very small means and hints.
What modernist features can you find in the story? How does it differ from Victorian realist literature?
What is the main message or meaning, do you think, of the story? What kind of revelation is it that Mrs Bates has? Try also to summarize Schulz’s argument. Which previous critical claim is he opposing towards the end of his article, and do you agree with him?
