Definitions—can be dictionary definition or images, thoughts and feelings that come to mind—what most people think of first
A comparison
A quote that leads the reader into the topic or theme
General truth—a statement about life, human nature or people; behavior that applies to many or most people
Give a shocking statistic
PART TWO: BODY PARAGRAPHS
Topic Sentences: This is the focus point of the paragraph. Everything in the paragraph should be connected to this, either directly or indirectly.
Arguments: These break down the thesis, showing the points that must be proven in order to work up to proving the topic sentence.
Evidence/Support : Details, facts cited as proof, quotations, etc.
Quotations are any words, phrases or sentences that you copy directly from another source—spoken or written. Does not have to be dialogue.
PART THREE: CONCLUSION
Logically wraps up the ideas that have been presented
Does not introduce new and unrelated material or ideas
Leaves the reader with something to think about
