This outline is aimed to help you write the actual Paper assignment. Therefore, pay attention to the comments and feedback I will provide on your outline.
The Room for Debate Paper assignment asks you to both summarize and evaluate four editorial articles written for the New York Time’s “Room for Debate” series topic: “Have Christians Created a Harmful Atmosphere for Gays?”
You will be using the Holistic Critical Thinking Rubric (HCTSR) to evaluate each of the editorial articles. See Chapter One of the textbook.
NOTE: The paper assignment tests your ability to critically evaluate the four editorial articles assigned. I will be assessing you on your critical thinking skills as you assess the critical thinking skills of the authors who wrote the editorials.

1. Introduction and Thesis (for the whole paper, not for every author/editorial article)
a. Introduction: Introduce your paper. For example, you may choose to provide the background for this particular topic – why was this topic chosen? 5 points
b. Thesis (for the whole paper, not for every author/editorial article). Review the Writing FAQs guide for thesis help. This thesis sentence presents the central idea of the paper. It must always be a complete, grammatical sentence, specific and brief, which expresses the point of view you are taking towards the subject.* 5 points
2. Summary (summarize each editorial article). 20 points total for all four summaries.
a. State each author’s stance on the debate topic. Does he or she agree with the topic? 8 points total
b. Include three main points for each editorial article. 12 points total
c. Avoid using quotes – I want to see that you understand what the author is trying to say in your own words. Refer to the Summary Writing Guide posted in Canvas under Helpful links if you are not sure how to write a summary.
3. Evaluation:50 points total
a. Explain what the HCTSR is. 4 points
b. Identify two HCTSR critical thinking skills (or lack of skills) for each author and provide a single HCTSR rating based on these skills or lack of skills. 8 points total
c. Select two relevant quotes from each author to support your HCTSR rating of each author. Cite appropriately. 8 points total
d. Explain in detail how these quotes demonstrate the HCTSR skills or lack of skills you identified for each author. 20 points total
e. Using terminology from the textbook will show me that you are knowledgeable of the material and will therefore be to your benefit. 10 points

EXAMPLE 1: Two HCTSR critical thinking skills:
“Offers analyses and evaluations of obvious alternative points of views.”
