define the current status of your topic. This essay includes explaining your specific topic,
placing it in the context of modern society, and examining the effects of your problem on the lives of individuals, society, and perhaps globally—all to show your reader why they should care

You should define the problem or situation by describing its individual characteristics, so you will want to focus a paragraph or closely related group of paragraphs on each characteristic, clearly stating what is unique about it by using a specific, focused topic.
