Utilize the five-paragraph essay structure to either support (fortification) or denounce (deconstruction) in your thesis – ONE of the following writings we have reviewed in class:
Link – “How Boys Become Men” by Jon Katz
Link – “Don’t Peak in High School” by Mindy Kaling
Link – “Shooting an Elephant” by George Orwell
Introduction:
Remember to name the piece and its author. For background information, tell a bit of what the narrative was about. Give a preview of support as to the three areas you will discuss in the first two body paragraphs plus the third body paragraph where you acknowledge the view that would be against you, and next provide a thesis statement either supporting the piece altogether or claiming it did not work. (Would you publish this if you were an editor of a general fiction magazine?)
Body Paragraphs:
Identify issues in terms of things like author’s style, literary elements, structure, grammar, voice, theme, etc. These will be your body paragraphs, one issue each.
You must have one body paragraph (Body Paragraph #3) accounting for the imagined opposing argument and why you decided not to go that way. Therefore, if you fortify overall, you need a paragraph concerning what one might deconstruct, and why you decided not to. If you deconstruct, you need a paragraph concerning what one might fortify and why you decided not to.
