introduces your topic (as a research question) and (2) explains how you intend to answer that question through independent research. Your task is to convince me (the reader) that your project is worth exploring and actually do-able, given the limited amount of time available to you in this class. You should explain clearly the kind of research it might require (primary and/or secondary), where you expect to find useful sources, and how these sources might help you answer your research question.
What is your proposed topic? Describe the WHO, WHAT, WHERE, and WHEN of
your subject in as much detail as possible. Be careful not to use excessive jargon or
verbiage that might be unfamiliar to a general audience. Try to convince your reader that
this issue is a big deal and demands immediate attention.
2. What is your research question? Basically, what is the specific thing you want to know
more about? This question should be complex enough to require extensive research. It
should not be answerable with a simple Google search. Often, a good research question
will be open-ended and involve some use of HOW or WHY, as these typically require
some type of in-depth analysis to answer.
3. What makes this question important or worthy of study? For this part, try to avoid
simply explaining why YOU are interested in this topic. Focus on explaining why
OTHERS should be. How might this project be of use to other researchers in your field?
How will it expand our understanding of your subject? Why should that research matter
to a general audience?
4. Why are you interested in this subject? This is where you should focus on what
inspired you to take up this topic. Emphasize any experiences – academic, personal, or
professional – that ignited your interest.
5. How do you plan to answer this question? Explain what kinds of sources you anticipate
consulting to answer your question and how you will obtain access to them. Again, be
very specific here. How much research already exists on this subject? What kinds of
databases (give specific examples) do you plan to use find these sources? What kinds of
search terms will you use? If your project requires field research, explain what kinds of
methods you plan to use? Remember that the goal here is to persuade me that your
