Write an interpretation of Matthew 25:31–46 that sets
forth your position on the issue of the relationship of Christians with those of other
world religions. Your essay should draw on the readings we have done this semester on
the interpretation of the New Testament. Better essays show comprehensive
knowledge by drawing from several sources. You are not required to use outside
sources, but you may wish to do so if you also include our class texts. All quotations and
paraphrases should be correctly notated and cited. Include full bibliographic citations
for outside materials, including materials on Matthew 25:31–46 and the statement in
the document “Light of the Nations” (Lumen Gentium).
Your essay should include these 2 parts:
1. Set forth your own position on the interpretation of Matthew 25:31–46. Does
Matthew indicate the parameters for an individual to enter the kingdom of heaven, and
if so, precisely what are they?
2. Write an intelligent analysis of the parable of the last judgment in Matthew that uses
interpretive tools you have learned this semester. Apply your results to the specific issue
of the salvation of those of other faiths as addressed in the document “Light of the
Nations.”
