There is a play on words going on in the Star Trek episode “Ship in a Bottle.” Lieutenant Barclay’s name is a homonym for the last name of Bishop George Berkeley. The good Bishop argues that to be is to be perceived, if there is no perceiver then there is no existence. Write a short paper (3-4 pages) answering the questions “Does Lieutenant Barclay know that he is off the Holodeck?” In the course of your answer, be sure to consider at least two (2) different theories of knowledge and state clearly how each of those theories leads to an answer to the question.
