To what extent has expansive or narrow trade unionism served the goals of the movement?

*Must have read Erik Loomis, A History of America in Ten Strikes*

For our first paper, please consider our readings in Loomis’s book alongside our theoretical discussion of social movements and our discussion of contemporary events. The major questions we have been considering in understanding how the labor movement has shaped US history are:

How have different subsets of the labor movement used different tactics to achieve their goals?

To what extent has expansive or narrow trade unionism served the goals of the movement?

How has the labor movement been shaped by other identities besides those of workers?

How has the labor movement succeeded or failed in integrating women and ethnic or racial minorities?

What have been the consequences of this integration or its failure?

How have the prospects of labor organization changed over time, and what are its present possibilities?

Your paper can be organized however you feel appropriate, but I would like you to include the following things:

Consider at least 2 of the strikes Loomis discusses

Consider these strikes or the movement more broadly in relation to Almeida’s theorization

Consider Loomis’s strikes in relation to the potential successes of contemporary labor, citing at least 2 of our contemporary news stories

Requirements:

4 pages, double spaced, Times New Roman, 1″ margins, *.doc or *.docx format

In-text citations for Loomis and Almeida: (Author, page #)

Include bibliography with links to 2 news stories cited. In-text citation style: (“Abbreviated title”)

No other outside sources.
