For the introduction:

Begin with a topic sentence that identifies that authors often use themes in their novels to teach lessons or make a point about society.
Follow with a sentence that states that themes play an important role in the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton
Summarize how themes are important in the novel.
Finish with a thesis that highlights three of the important themes.
Themes to consider in The Outsiders like the life of an alternative family, the risks and unfairness stereotypes can bring about, as well as the inequalities that exist within a divided community. For the three body paragraphs highlighting the different themes.

In the topic sentence for each paragraph identify one theme as an important message in the novel.
In the following sentences summarize how the novel expresses that theme but do so in your own words.
In the middle of the paragraph, use a passage, following that three step process we have already discussed.
Introduce that the theme is shown in the following passage in one sentence.

Finally, explain in your own words how the passage supports your point about the theme.

Then give the passage with a citation at the end that states where the page number or paragraph number of the source. Then explain how that source supports your point.
