Assignment – Term Paper Proposal
You will be developing a term paper this semester examining a prevalent disease or condition impacting the United States. Your paper will evaluate the impact of this disease/condition among an racial/ethnic group of your choosing and a novel treatment protocol that shows promise in either curing, managing or preventing the disease/condition among this population. An outline of what your paper should cover is as follows:
Introduction:
Define the disease/condition
Etiology and contributing risk factors
Prevalence in the United States
Racial/ethnic differences among those impacted
Impact of disease/condition on the US economy via direct (e.g. medical costs) and indirect (e.g. loss of productivity) costs
Thesis statement/purpose of paper: Examine either a novel treatment protocol or prevention strategy that would be beneficial to pursue
Note: Novel treatment protocols can include the use of new medications or medical equipment. This can also include health education techniques such as the use of community health workers, e-interventions, school-based programs, workplace wellness programs and others.
Body: Conduct a literature search to identify scholarly articles providing evidence for the efficacy of your proposed treatment protocol. Present a summary of your research findings.
Note: You should include a minimum of three research studies to support your thesis statement.
Conclusion:
Strengths and limitations of the studies you presented
Were the studies conducted among an appropriate number of people? Were their samples representative of the population you would like to target?
Were the correct evaluation methodologies utilized?
Were there any issues in the way data was collected in these studies?
Thoughts in regard to what future research in this field should focus on
Is more research needed to confirm efficacy of this treatment option?
Do you see an opportunity to expand the current literature in a different manner?

For this module, you will be proposing the topic on which your term paper will be focused. You will conduct a preliminary literature review and propose the following: a disease/condition; a racial/ethnic group in the United States for which this disease/condition largely affects; and a novel cure, management or prevention strategy you believe to be promising to utilize among this population.
Instructions:
Write a one-page proposal (12 point font, double-spaced) for your term paper. You must include your proposed thesis statement, and a brief summary of the research that you have identified thus far to support your thesis statement.
An example of a thesis statement is as follows: Motivational interviewing can be utilized to help improve type 2 diabetes management outcomes, as measured by HbA1c, among Mexican-Americans.
Your proposal should demonstrate why your thesis statement is important to examine and why the proposed cure/management/prevention strategy is important to further research
