Find your two articles: For this project you will select current (published no earlier than January 2017) issues of two
academic journals related to your intended discipline; that is, select journals related to your major/career/field or the one you
are considering. Both journals must be accessible through ECU databases. You will analyze one article from each journal.
Who publishes the journal? Continuing my example, the journal is published by The National Council of
Teachers of English
Who are the journals written for—who are the intended audiences? The audience is also clearly described on the
homepage of my example including the different subject matters that are covered for that audience.
Is this journal focused on a sub-field? By reading about the journal Teaching English in the Two-Year College, I can
find that it is directed toward the specific subfields of educators who teach English in two-year colleges, or in
the first two years of four-year colleges.
As you develop your analysis essay, you should consider the following
questions:
What is the rhetorical situation? (i.e., audience)
What is the rhetorical purpose of the article?
What general qualities do you see in the article’s composition?
What is the writer’s (or writers’) message?
What strategies do they employ to communicate that message to the reader?
How is the writing of the selected articles organized?
What is the nature of the content—what are the articles about?
What are the features of the writing—is it long, heavy, theoretical?
Does the writing employ active voice or passive voice?
Are there graphs or figures?
How are sources cited? If you can, identify the style of citation practices.
