Overview
In this course, much of your research and reading focuses on a topic of interest to you, with the goal of drawing upon that research to develop an in-depth Final Project. The creation of an annotated bibliography will help you organize and evaluate the many references you acquire throughout the course.
What is the Annotated Bibliography?
An annotated bibliography is a list of sources you will use in your research for class. It can contain articles, books, websites, and other sources that inform your work.
Why is the Annotated Bibliography Necessary?
A well-done annotated bibliography will save you time by allowing you to organize and evaluate your sources. You will use many sources over the semester and the annotated bibliography will keep them organized so that you can easily make decisions about which sources are useful for a given assignment.
Summarizing the sources will provide you the opportunity to practice and develop your ability to write about scientific sources accurately, in your own words. Do not use direct quotes from the source in your summary or evaluation.
Evaluating the sources will give you the opportunity to practice applying many of the concepts we are focusing on in class, such as
identifying the source as primary, secondary, or tertiary,
specifying the study design or methods, and
applying critical analysis to make decisions about the strengths and weaknesses of the source overall and in relation to your specific needs for assignments.
As your annotated bibliography grows over the semester, you will also be able to use it as a tool to make connections and comparisons between your sources, which will contribute to your ability to synthesize the research you read throughout the course into a cohesive body of knowledge.
What is Included in the Annotated Bibliography?
A citation for each source in APA format, listed alphabetically.

What is Included in the Annotation?
First, the annotation should identify the source as a primary research article, a secondary research article, a tertiary source, or another type of source (such as a textbook, reference website, etc.)
Next, each annotation should have:
a summary portion and
an evaluation portion
What is included in each summary and evaluation portion will vary slightly depending on the type of source. Some annotations may also include:
a brief comparison to other sources in the bibliography
a description of how the source is connected or related to other sources in the bibliography
For Primary Research Articles
The annotation summary should specify what was being studied, the methods and design, the study sample, and the main outcomes.
The annotation evaluation should specify the strengths and weaknesses of the study, the relevance of the main conclusions, any unique aspects of the research, and why this source is relevant to your research interests. If possible, identify the specific BBH topics addressed in this source and note which assignments this source could be relevant to.
If applicable, note how the results compare or are related to other sources/articles in your bibliography.
The length of the annotation should be approximately 300 words.
For Secondary Research Articles
The annotation summary should specify what was being studied, type of article (literature review, systematic review, meta-analysis, or something else), the methods used to conduct the review, inclusion and exclusion criteria, and the main findings.
The annotation evaluation should specify the strengths and weaknesses of the methods, the relevance of the main conclusions, any unique aspects of the research, and why this source is relevant to your research interests. If possible, identify the specific BBH topics addressed in this source and note which assignments this source could be relevant to.
If applicable, note how the results compare or are related to other sources/articles in your bibliography.
The length of the annotation should be approximately 300 words.
For Tertiary Sources
The annotation summary should describe the source and its purpose, any unique features of the source, and its intended audience (public, patients, clinicians, researchers, policy makers, etc.).
The annotation evaluation should specify the strengths and weaknesses of the source and why this source is relevant to your research interests. If possible, identify the specific BBH topics addressed in this source and note which assignments this source could be relevant to.
If applicable, note how the results compare or are related to other sources/articles in your bibliography.
The length of the annotation should be no less than 150 words.
How to Format the Annotation
Title a new page: Annotated Bibliography 1
List the sources in APA format (by last name of author)
Under each reference write the annotation
You must use Hanging Indents. The first line of the citation starts at the left margin, and subsequent lines of the citation are indented 5 spaces.
The whole annotation is indented 5 spaces.
The length of the citation will vary by source.
The Importance of Academic Integrity
Remember to use your own words to summarize and evaluate your sources. Part of the annotated bibliography assignment is to strengthen your ability to write about scientific sources, therefore, plagiarism software will be used to check your submission. Points will be deducted for summaries and evaluations that match the source too closely.
Assignment Requirements
This assignment provides an opportunity to compile an annotated bibliography of at least four (4) references related to your overall BBH topic of interest for the course. Please note that you will complete a second annotated bibliography with additional references later in the course, therefore, if you currently have more than six relevant references, you are not required to include them all in this submission. For this assignment, you need to complete the following steps:
Step 1: Choose at least four (4) references to relevant sources. You may include references from your prior course work, including discussions and short papers. Only one reference may be for a website.
Step 2: Create a reference for each source in APA format.
Step 3: Create an annotation according to the guidelines, listed in these assignment instructions, for each reference.
Step 4: Write a short reflection (3-5 sentences) noting any challenges you experienced in completing this assignment and/or something new that you learned throughout this process.
Format Directions
Prepare your response in a word-processing document.
The length of the completed annotated bibliography will vary but should include at least four (4) distinct sources. You will complete a second annotated bibliography with additional references later in the course. Therefore, if you currently have more than six sources, you are not required to include them all in this submission.
Each annotation should include the following sections:
Identify source as Primary Research, Secondary, or Tertiary
Summary
Evaluation
Comparison Statement
Conclude the assignment with a short reflection statement.
Submission
You must submit your paper to Turnitin, using this drop box. Please be aware that your paper will be checked for plagiarism through Turnitin. Thus, make sure everything is in your own words and that anything you paraphrase has been paraphrased appropriately. Make sure that you submit the correct file(s).
