The speech should be easy to follow, understand, and remember. Information should be adapted to the audience’s level of knowledge. A clear, central idea should be maintained throughout the speech, with a clear purpose and thesis. Must include a clear and complete introduction, body, and conclusion. The introduction should contain an attention-getter, purpose, relevance, credibility, and thesis/preview statement. The body should have at least 2 main points and not more than 4 main points. The conclusion should signal to close, review the main points, and have a memorable closing thought.
Outline: You’ll be submitting a formal preparation outline. Using the guidelines from the organizing and outlining modules, your outline should be double-spaced, 12pt Times New Roman font. It should use full sentences and include every part of your speech (introduction, body, conclusion, and transition sentences) and use outline formatting (indentation and outline symbols like I, A, i, a, for example).
Use a variety of supporting materials that will clarify and support your thesis and main points as well as hold the interest of your audience. You can use personal information, but this speech requires the use of information from other sources, so you will need to conduct research. Cite all information that doesn’t derive from your personal experience and ideas or isn’t common knowledge. A minimum of three outside sources is required, one of the three must be scholarly. Sources should be credible, recent, and/or relevant. Include citations in speech, outline, and work cited page. The outline should include formal citations in MLA format. Speeches will be checked for plagiarism; consequences will be enforced. The proper use and crediting of information accounts for part of your speech and outline grade. Please bold and italicize your sources in the your outline.
