Purpose:

To expose you to a wider range of performance. You will have an opportunity to witness different performers embody various literature at an elevated level. We have discussed/will discuss varying performance topics and techniques that you should pay attention to: character or dramatistic analysis, characterization, poetic devices, uses of audience, types of literature, etc.

Prompt:

You are being asked to attend an outside performance of literature. These performances can range in style of presentation and type of literature. Performances to observe can include, but are not limited to: school plays or musicals, poetry slams, forensics showcases, and public readings.

You must be able to provide proof of attendance. So make sure to keep your confirmation email or ticket stub, or take a selfie at the event. The type of proof may vary.

Your final step is to write up a reflection on the performance. Your paper should include the following components:

A short description of the performance.
Highlight the type of literature that the performers utilized.
Choose a performer to focus on: Did they embody a character? What were some specific performance choices they made in regard to the character? How did they engage with the literature? What poetic devices did they utilize? Etc.
Describe the space and audience. Why does this space and type of audience make sense for this performance?
What larger context or theory could you connect the performance to?
Overall thoughts on your experience?

Your analysis of the performance should make connections to topics that you are studying in the class. Try to include terms and concepts that you have learned about in the readings or class discussions. The Pelias article on Canvas is a good place to look for terms that you can use in your analysis.
