For this essay, you may choose to respond to either “Assignments for Writing” #1 OR #2 on page 640.

Assignment #1 asks you to consider why Wideman talks about his difficulties as a writer in the text itself. If you choose to answer this question, you may ignore the last part of the assignment–about what Wideman’s choices as a writer have to do with your work in this class.

Assignment #2 asks you to look closely at one of the smaller stories embedded within this chapter–the story of Homewood, of Robby and John’s mother, or of their grandfather–and discuss what how this smaller story relates to the larger story of Robby’s crime, their family, etc. Briefly summarize the relevant details of the story you pick, then analyze it–how does the smaller story connect to the larger story John Wideman is telling about his brother and himself?
