Dialogue Activity: Hills Like White Elephants

Hemingway once suggested that his purpose in writing a story like “Hills Like White Elephants” is to tell the reader as little as possible directly yet to reveal characters’ motives and their conflict.
Your Task: Write a scene in which one of the following is true:
1. a man and a woman go into a mattress store to buy a bed. The couple can only talk about the bed, but must nonetheless reveal through the conversation the real situation between them.
2. a father and his college- bound son go into a car dealership to buy a car. The two can only talk about the cars, but the conversation must nonetheless reveal the real situation (i.e., the father and his wife are getting divorced because of his infidelity).
3. a mother and her teenage daughter are baking cookies together. The daughter is considering having sex for the first time and wants to talk about the issue with her mother; however, she’s unsure of how to do that. While the two can only talk about baking, the conversation must reveal the real issue at hand.
4. two people (you decide) are going to a location (you decide) to buy something (you decide). While they can only talk about what they are going to buy, the conversation must nonetheless reveal some real issue between them (you decide).
Rules.
· 300-1000 words, written like a scene, with dialogue, interiority, and external details.
· Evoke at least three senses.
· Two or more characters, so they have someone to interact with.
· End the scene with the reader wanting more!
