Write a 2-3 page (500-750 word – double spaced) “braided” essay.
First, think of three subjects that fit these three categories:
An object of great meaning
A larger picture—social or historical
Your personal story, or memoir
Second, “braid” them together. The way these three subjects are related may be obvious—for example, a camp stove your parents gave you (the object), the history of Michigan State Parks (larger picture), and your memories of camping (personal story). These three subjects may also be ostensibly unrelated—for example, a wristwatch (object), environmental destruction (larger picture), and the summer you slummed it in Chicago (personal story). When the three subjects are not obviously connected, your exciting essay makes the relationships clear.
