Guidelines
The first few weeks of the course has introduced you to many professional standards and guidelines, as well as the concept of critical thinking. Select one of the standards/guidelines listed below that has been introduced in weeks 1 and 2. Use this standard as a basis to explore the importance of the standard/ guideline to the profession of nursing and your own practice. Consider the implications that the standard may have on the clients that you care for. In addition, you must use two or three articles from the literature to support your written ideas in
the paper.
Include a thesis for your paper. “The thesis of a paper is the idea on which the entire paper is based. Therefore, it must be the result of a comprehensive reflection. If it is formulated as a statement, the paper must prove its validity; if it is formulated as a question, the paper must answer it. Whether it is expressed in the form of a statement or question, a strong thesis has three qualities: it is specific, argumentative, and explanatory” (Ottawa University Writing Center- see handout). The thesis statement should be clearly stated in the essay’s introduction.
“Literature” refers to peer reviewed articles recently published in nursing or health care journals and excludes textbook chapters, editorials or websites. Information from nursing textbooks may be used for gaining background on your selected topic and referenced accordingly, however, cannot be used as the main sources for developing your ideas to support your thesis statement. (I.e. will not count as one of your three articles) In writing the paper, you must use two or three articles from the literature to support your ideas. The articles selected from the literature should have been published within the last five (5) years. Relevancy is important and health care rapidly changes.
Please note: Editorials and opinion pieces are not peer reviewed articles.
Please note: Students seeking feedback on scholarly article appropriateness are invited to connect with the course professor for discussion if needed.
