Student must read and offer a response to the book In the Time of the Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. Chose ONE of the topics below and use it to craft your response. Please integrate course material and use both references from the book and class material or other weekly readings as a reference. I am looking for integrated papers which not only respond to the selected question below but also show your integration of the course material thus far.

How do the characters in the novel demonstrate an understanding of a good life from an ethical perspective? How does a virtue (courage, justice, love) of your choosing weave through the text and allow the reader to make ethical conclusions during the book? Can you discuss what ethical conclusion you have made after reading the book about looking at history through the lens of stories told by people who lived through a particular experience? Pull examples of how Dede’s life and work gives meaning to the other sisters.
This novel is historical fiction. It addresses life in the Dominican Republic during the Trujillo years. Discuss what you have learned from reading this. Did you know about this history in the Dominican Republic or is this the first time you read about it? Discuss how the topic of resistance and telling the story has an impact on the characters in the past and present? Can you argue that a history of violence and oppression makes it harder for a culture and a country to thrive. Pull examples of resistance and healing from the text to support your topic.
The novel deals with the characters of the four Mirabel sisters. Which one did you most connect with? Write a paper which addresses character traits that impacted you. After showing which character you most connect with choose one other character and do a compare and contrast reflections on what makes those characters similar and different. Discuss how ethical theories may propel characters to act in a certain way in a particular situation. Pull examples of ethical actions from the characters and structure your paper around this.

Material – from In the Time of the Butterflies– what have you learned from reading this text in terms of ethics – use at least three quotations from the novel to support your ideas in your paper.
Connect the book with course material we have used this far– biblical perspective – ethical theories – any of the weekly readings that have struck you- make at least one connection in the paper to one other reading we have done this far. You may also use the material in lectures to support your arguments (properly cited as a lecture). Including facts, quotes, or media references from lectures would make useful supplements to arguments found in the readings.
In your last paragraph: Please add personal ideas about future careers and how this material can influence that – what are your thoughts midway through the semester about the how we can approach literature and the things we read in our daily lives with an ethical lens and perspective. How might what we have learned this far impact how you think about the world after this semester.
