Using the reading material, theories, lectures and discussions we’ve thus far engaged in the course through Week 7, prepare a short essay of 1,000-1,250 words (4-5 pages double spaced) that “critically engages” an album of Megan Thee Stallion (or Nicki Minaj, Lil’ Kim, Missy Elliott or another black woman who raps).
The purpose of this assignment is for you use this short essay to take a Megan/Minaj/Kim/Elliott album and think through it using course material–primarily black feminist texts that investigate issues of black women’s representations in American popular culture.
Need help finding an angle? Look at the titles of our class sessions. Look back at the readings. What themes stand out most to you? What would you like to discuss, explore, or investigate further? How can you use this analysis to help you think through the themes in your final
project? You must include:
Thesis: Provide a clear, concise thesis statement
Analysis: Demonstrate a well articulated analysis of an album by Megan/Minaj/Kim/Elliott to include a thorough discussion of at least one song from that album. Analysis consists of relating specific issues, moments, instances within the text (the album/song) to specific concepts we’ve covered in class. For example, if you were analyzing Minaj’s “Anaconda,” you could discuss the song’s engagement with the ways in which black women’s bodies (their butts especially) are politicized in American popular culture.
References: Must be properly formatted using Chicago (Author-Date) style guide (or your preferred style guide). Your essay should include multiple references from course materials, and at least 1 outside academic reference not assigned (must be an article/chapter length, academic source).
