The Movie Review Project
The Movie Review Assignment is due by the end of week #3.
Movie Review Learning Objectives:
● Describe the context, events, and plot of movie about an event/person/idea which occurred during the time period studied in this class (1400-Civil War)
● Evaluate the accuracy of the movie using primary and secondary sources.
To complete these objectives, you will find a movie to review that is in the time frame of our class and concerns American historical events. You will briefly describe key parts of the film and then compare what you see on the screen to the “real history” that you have researched. At the end of the paper, you will be able to state whether the movie is historically accurate based on your research.
Some details about the project:
● It is worth as much as one of your test grades.
● The total length will need to be at least 1200 words.
● You need to use three credible sources. If you use your textbook, that counts as
one of your three sources.
● Provide a properly formatted Works Cited Page
Your review is to be broken into three sections. The first section will be a description of the movie, with details of the plot and the issues that appear in the movie. Please give the name of the movie, the year it came out, the main characters’ names and who played them in the movie (http://www.imdb.com will help a bit here). Act as if I haven’t seen the movie, and give me enough information to understand what is going on in the movie with the characters. Don’t forget to mention how the movie ends…after all, it is a story that is being told.
In the second section, check your textbook (and other sources) and see if you can find out what “really happened” in history. Your job is to decide based on evidence what was accurate and what was not. Make sure you have specific points or issues that you’ve seen in your sources when you are comparing them to the movie. If someone in the movie gets married, has kids, dies, wins or loses a battle, did that happen in the “real” history? Most of your citations should be in this section. The final section is your personal evaluation of the movie.
