“With the many advances that technology has made, it can be helpful to incorporate their benefits into our
everyday work routines as healthcare providers. Over the years, smartphone technology is becoming a larger part of our everyday lives. There are numerous benefits of using communication devices. They are convenient, fast, portable and readily available making them easy to use in order to facilitate work. Like everywhere else in society,
wireless-enabled devices are increasingly being used in day-to-day operations in healthcare. With continued changes in operational practices and high-tech advances, PHI is more commonly being communicated and accessed
using mobile devices such as smartphones, cell phones, and tablets (Pupkis, 2018).
Being able to interact with
others and retrieve information quickly has its advantages such as quick up to date treatments and recommended interventions. The advantages of using company devices is that it has a secured network with firewall protection.
Company devices can also have many more resources related to healthcare and be set so that a device can only
be accessed for work purposes. A disadvantage of using company devices is availability, connectivity issues,
training and cost of devices. Some company devices may not have the best connection, many facilities may not
have enough devices or trained personnel in devices and may not have the budget to integrate devices into their
practice. These disadvantages leave staff to rely on their personal devices when needed to communicate with
providers. Although, it may be convenient for nurses and physicians to exchange communication through personal devices it raises legal and ethical issues. Sending anything related to a patient’s health information via a personal
device can lead to you being fired, fined, going to jail, or losing your nursing license (Hebda, 2019).
I feel that with proper guidelines in place, company devices can be useful and vital when it comes to relaying information to other providers.
I would opt for having nurses use company devices to contact doctors and receive orders and discuss patient care. I would adopt a system where text messages can be HIPPA compliant if done by secure
texting through a private vendor. This will allow text messages to be encrypted and can be programmed to expire automatically or used in PHI. In this way, patients can be educated about the advantages of these devices, they can be engaged in decisions involving their own health care, and they can be reassured that their privacy and personal
information will be protected. “
