I think the use of the eminent domain process to take private property from one individual for the use of a private entity or business is wrong. I think if it’s for a government use that benefits the general public then that’s okay but if it’s being taken away for private use like how it was in the Rod’s Restaurant video, it’s quite unfair. The fact that the government is doing these property seizures for the pure purpose of generating more property taxes is very unethical and just leads to a more money-hungry, industrialized world that does not value personal property or rights. Also, something that was shown in the video was the government using eminent domain to take away property that not only was somebody’s home, but also their business. Meaning, in one swoop the government could take away somebody’s entire life and way of income. In case study #3 in the video, a woman described how a family had to move because of government use of eminent domain and their home was also an auto-body shop. This family was left without a home and without their business that was their source of income and livelihood. As said in the video, we must put property and personal rights ahead of economic development. Something that was overlooked in the video that I do think should be discussed is the fact that the property owners in the video will receive fair market value money compensation for the property seized. In many cases, this could actually be a great benefit to a property owner. No, it should not be an inherent government right to take property for private business use, but the other side of this transaction should be acknowledged. Property owners are receiving compensation and shouldn’t be viewed as just helplessly having their homes taken away, with no monetary relief from the government.

Does the Eminent Domain process have the right to take private property from one individual to sell/transfer to another individual (not for government use). I believe that this Eminent Domain process should not have the right to take private property from one and sell to another. To me, this process seems to be very unfair to me. I don’t really understand how someone would be able to just simply take away someone else’s property just like that and sell or transfer it to another. If I had a business or some sort of property of my own that I worked hard for and was very passionate about and it just so quickly got taken away from me, I would be extremely upset.
The example of ‘Rod’s Restaurant’ in the video showed that they were trying to take away his restaurant that has been in business for many many years simply just to expand a car dealership. Rod claimed that it wasn’t fair which is the truth because his restaurant has been in business for a long time and with having the same loyal workers and customers for the entire process of it all and this process of taking away his property would not only be unfair to him, but to all his loyal workers as well. Rod mentioned in the video that “this is not the proper way of using eminent domain.” He also goes on to mention that he was not willing to sell it because it wasn’t going to good use as in a library or school but solely only to expand a car dealership which didn’t sit right with him. This scare caused much of a deep concern for customers and citizens of this town which the restaurant in located in as well, who have been going to this restaurant since the opening of it.
