The chief reason why so many give such a little attention to the background of the Negro is the belief that this
study is unimportant (Woodson, p. 129).
With the domestication of animals, the discovery of iron, the development of stringed instruments, and an
advance in art, and the inauguration of trial by jury, the Negro stands just as high as others in contributing to
the progress of the world (Woodson, p.130).
The songs of the slave represent the sorrows of his heart; and he is relieved by them, only as an aching
heart is relieved by its tears (Douglass, p. 15).
Now, said he, “If you teach that (speaking of myself) how to read, there would be no keeping him. It
would make him discontent and unhappy. I now understood what had been to me a most perplexing
