First, please read the attached case about the Stage Ensemble Theater Unit (the case is titled “The Show Must Go On: Making the Numbers Work for a Not-for-Profit Theater Company).

Jayanti Bandyopadhyay, one of the co-founders of the Stage Ensemble Theater Unit (SETU), is concerned about the financial picture for the community theater group’s current show, Kamala. Jayanti is an accounting professor at the local university. She knows that an in-depth CVP and sensitivity analysis is a useful way to explore possible risks and uncertainties, and she has asked you to help. She has explained that it is important for the SETU to remain financially viable so that it can fulfill its mission to bridge the culture gap between India and the Western world through the medium of theater.

Write a memo that makes recommendations to SETU to help it increase the probability that its production of Kamala will be a success financially, on-stage as well as in the community.

As you develop recommendations, consider the SETU mission and other information provided in the case about the SETU operations. Your recommendations should be consistent with the mission and in line with prior experiences of the theater. Your recommendations should be realistic. Use the Excel workbook you created to do the Basic Case Analysis to check the financial viability of your recommendations. In other words, perform a “what-if” analysis to determine the effect of different scenarios (i.e., recommendations). A “what-if” analysis allows you to test out changes in multiple, sometimes inter-related, assumptions. For example, if you recommend a change to the marketing plan your scenario should reflect the cost of the new
marketing plan and the effect it will have on ticket receipts. Use estimated contribution margins, income, and break-even points to evaluate the potential effectiveness of your recommendations.

Cases often have more than one defensible solution, so you need to support your chosen recommendation. You will not receive high scores if you do not address the primary issue(s) in a given assignment or if you are not clear and specific in your memo and analyses.

Your memo should be no longer than necessary, and absolutely【 no longer than one page】.
