Assignment 11: Chapter 11
1. Social reality is complex, and therefore, acquiring knowledge of it can also be complex. Throughout the course you have been introduced to a variety of methods with quantitative and qualitative methods being the primary divide presented. In this chapter, triangulation or the idea that more than one method may be needed to develop a better or more complete assessment of the social world is introduced. Using this premise, your task is to identify three separate methods that you could use to study either homicide or racism (you can choose which one you want to “study”), and then explain how you would go about using each method to study the topic of your choice.
To complete this assignment, you will need to do the following:
a) Provide a statement on which topic you are going to address.
b) Define the concept you are addressing (racism or homicide).
c) Identify and define three methods that you might use to observe the social manifestation of your topic. You need to include at least one quantitative and one qualitative method.
d) Write one or more paragraphs per method explaining how you would use the chosen method to study your topic.
e) Write a paragraph or more explaining how and why the combination of methods you chose is a better approach for studying the topic than just using one method by itself.
It would be a good idea to rely on the text and cite (quote) from it to support your statements and choices. You should also keep in mind that you are trying to explain these topics at the social not the individual level. This means that you should focus on shared characteristics, cultures, environments, etc. as the “causes” of racism or homicide, not individual characteristics (like psychological drives).
