1. Navigate to the Industry Productivity ViewerLinks to an external site https://data.bls.gov/apps/industry-productivity-viewer/home.htm. page of the Bureau of Labor Statistics website.

Under the Select one or more industries section, click on the words “RETAIL TRADE”. Scroll down to Nonstore retailers and click the box at that line item..
Under Select one or more measures to compare, click the box at Hours worked (2012 = 100)
Now click Graph current selection.
Looking at the graph, what do you notice about the hours worked since 1987?
What specific companies can you think of that would be considered a “nonstore retailer”?
What has happened to demand for the goods produced in this industry since 1987?
Thinking about what has happened in the industry since 1987, how has this affected the “derived demand” for labor in this industry?
In the lower right corner of the graph window, click on the down arrow to download an image of the graph and submit it along with your answers.

2. Now, see if you can locate the industry that exists in the market that you are writing about in your research paper. If you have looked through the industry options and still need help identifying what that industry might be, you may contact your instructor to ask for some assistance.

Click on that industry, then select Hours worked (2012 = 100).
Describe what has happened in your chosen industry to hours worked.
Relate that trend to the demand for the goods produced in this industry. If demand for goods in that industry has increased, do you see an increase in hours worked? This represents the concept of Derived Demand in the labor market.
