World Music Reflection Papers Guidelines
I. General Information
• Read/watch the material posted on the Blackboard that is related to the theme of your reflection paper.
• Think of a main prompt or question related to the theme.
• Include at least one and maximum of two relevant course
material in your response. In other words, demonstrate that you comprehend the musical and cultural concepts that at the heart of this course.
• Include a musical analysis of a song shared that is related to the theme.
• Craft a rhetorical response. This is the main section of the paper (see below). Address the assigned prompt by referencing relevant aspects of the reading, song analysis and your own critical thinking.
• Submit as Word or PDF file on Turnitin by the posted due date.
III. Length, Layout & Citation

In-text citations, footnotes or endnotes are fine (as long as you are consistent).
You don’t need to cite the in-class lectures, video lectures or assigned music. However, mention that the information was attained in class in the prose itself
Do cite the assigned reading or film, if you chose to include it. Do cite any other sources you may choose to include.
IV. Summary of Song: Musical Analysis (reference the SAW)
• Choose at least one and maximum of 3 of the following elements to discuss in relation to the song.
• Instrumentation, ensemble, timbre, etc.
Rhythm, tempo, meter, rubato, etc.
Melody, phrase, riff, motive, theme, scale, etc. Texture
Harmony
Dynamic
Text, lyrics
Form, improvisation, composition, structure, etc.
V. Rhetorical Response – You will be evaluated based on the following:
• Quality of critical thinking
• Quality of argumentation
Support arguments
Make a clear distinction between objective and subjective elements.
