Students are expected to complete a personal work plan in which they describe how they can be culturally competent in the field of Human Services.
This paper will likely be 5 to 7 pages long (not including title,
abstract, and reference pages) and should follow APA 7th edition style guidelines.
Your paper should include concepts and information from class reading assignments (charactristics neede to work with diverse familes , discussion posts, and chats (e.g., open-mindedness, not generalizing groups, interpersonal skills, self-awareness, etc.)).
Be sure to include the following information in your paper:
1) reflect on your own cultural competence at the start of the semester and how the course has shaped your current view of your own culture as well as other cultural groups;
2) examine and describe which cultural groups would be stimulating and beneficial for you to work with; (Latinos (they’re the fastest growing group rn in the U.S.), and non-western cultures (values, collectivism, cultural differences and what to be aware of)).
3) discuss the various marginalized groups, such as ethnic, gender identity, sexual identity, and religion that might be challenging for you to work with in the field of human services and explain the reasons for this. Also, talk about steps you can take to become more culturally competent to work with this particular population; and lastly,
4) include a synopsis of the course concepts that were most meaningful for you and will shape and improve your work with clients and families in the field of human services.
