Cultural Appropriation – Case Study

Question – Cultural appropriation in fashionable dress has become the subject of increasingly widespread discussion in recent years, with most discussion occurring online. Brands across the fashion industry, from H&M to Gucci, have been ‘called out’ for producing and promoting garments that demean minoritized cultures by reducing them to hurtful stereotypes which they then profit off. Can a Western fashion brand ever ethically ‘culturally appropriate’?

I have chosen to answer tthe side “WESTERN FASHION BRANDS CAN NEVER ETHICALLY CULTURALLY APPROPRIATE” -specifically in fast fashion- if they acknowlege or give credit to original creators itsappreciation so that is a different thing but it can NEVER appropriate ethically.

A case study is a detailed study and analysis of a person, event, or group. Your case study should analyse one example or ‘case’ that demonstrates the subject of your project. Think of your case study as one example of the way in which your topic has given rise to debate, and as an example of something that relates very closely to the question you and your group have developed. Each case study further enhances your group’s research into the topic as it provides a real-life application of your analysis. Your tutor can provide suggestions for case studies, though we strongly encourage you to research and select your own case study for analysis (in consultation with your tutor).

It is important in this section that you don’t just recount or re-tell the story of the case study. This section requires analysis of the various factors surrounding the event or person you are studying.

This section should include at least seven sources, five academic and two non-academic. You should also include an appropriate number of other sources (ask your tutor if you are need further guidance on this). You may include sources your group members have gathered and used for A2, or you may add new sources. References should be formatted in Chicago 17th and added at the end of this section in a bibliography.
