First choose a virtue- Do not choose any of the Cardinal Virtues or Pride. If you do choose one of them you will be given a 0 for the assignment. (There are more than 500 to choose from – just not those 5. Please do not ask me to tell you a virtue, google list of virtues- there are hundreds.)
Explain why the virtue you chose is important for students. What goods or values does the consistent employment of this virtue produce?
Develop a general description of your virtue. Think along the following lines: people who have virtue X tend to exhibit certain characteristics (or do certain things) in certain kinds of situations.
Identify the corresponding vices. What characterizes the points of excess and defect between which your virtue as the mean lies? One vice of excess and one of deficiency is sufficient. ( Do not skip this question. Skipping this question will result in a 0 for the assignment. If you cannot answer tis question then you need to go back and read the Aristotle. )
What obstacles arise that prevent students from practicing your virtue? Do well-meaning students lack power or technical skill?.
Identify a moral exemplar (a person) for your virtue. Choose a well known person (Alive or dead, real or fictional. You cannot use : G_d, Jesus, Mohammad or the Buddha or a personal acquaintance. ) Explain how your person is a good moral example of the virtue.
Finally, does your virtue stand alone or does it need support from other virtues or skills? Explain why or how. For example, integrity might also require moral courage.
