In this research paper, you will search for two pieces of media that are based on the same type of event, such as newspaper articles of two different robberies. The media may be short videos such as those found on YouTube, newspaper articles, news headlines, magazines, or any other type of medium as long as it is able to be shared and included in your paper (e.g., hyperlinked YouTube video, pictures of the newspaper article, etc). One of the media pieces should be focused on someone who is a racial minority and one of the media pieces should be focused on someone who is part of the dominant group. Then, you will analyze the two pieces of media, recognizing the language used surrounding the individuals. How are they referred to? What names are used? How are the individuals and their actions described? How are they portrayed? What pieces of their lives are discussed? Then, explain why you believe that to be true based on what you learned in this chapter and applying one of the major theoretical perspectives in sociology. Add a reflection on what you’ve learned after looking at these pieces of media. Then, finish the paper with a works cited and ensure you have in-text citations throughout the paper to avoid plagiarism.
