Mini-Essay + Short Story
250-300 word mini-essay + 400-600 word short story
APA format
Part 1) For this creative option, you may write your own original short story. It can use any POV and be written in any style you like. However, it should employ some of the techniques we have discussed in class and, above all, be spellchecked and proofread. It can be expanded from one of the exercises in class.
Part 2) Additionally you must write a 250-300 word “mini-essay” in which you compare your story to another short story we read in class that has a similar theme. What differences and similarities are there?
Midterm Essay Checklist :Original Title – Does your paper have a unique and original title? Make sure to write
your own title related to your paper topic and not simply “Final Paper” or “English
Essay.”
If you choose the creation option, you can use the title of your mini-essay for the title
page of the paper.
Correct Paper Formatting – Make sure your paper has the following:
o Double spacing
o Indented paragraphs
o 12-point font (preferably Times New Roman)
o Page numbers (in upper right-hand corner for APA)
Introduction “Hook” – The first sentence or two of your first paragraph should be a
“hook” to catch the reader’s interest. See the basics of outlining document under “Course
Files” on Canvas.
Conclusion – Make sure to have a concluding paragraph that sums up your essay. See the
basics of outlining document under “Course Files” on Canvas.
Assignment Specific Things
Picking TWO Stories – remember this is a compare and contrast essay so you need to
write about two stories, not just one.
Did You Quote the Stories? – You should quote each story at least once and use APA
style in-text citations.
A Theme – What is the theme that unifies the works you’re talking about? Is it
something like love or motherhood? Or something more specific? It’s up to you, but there
should be one theme you discuss in your essay.
