Cultural Film Review on the movie the Joy Luck Club

• After viewing the film, prepare a 600-800 word paper (about three-four double-spaced pages) discussing the
ways in which culture is portrayed in the movie, and the impact that culture had on health and illness.
• A well written paper will include a succinctly composed introduction and conclusion, as well as a very brief
introduction to the main theme of the film – DO NOT recount the events of the film – I have already viewed the
film, so I already know what it is about. The bulk of the paper should focus on your interpretation of the
character’s experiences with culture, health, and illness with ample evidence and examples from the film to
support your discussion. You may find it best to focus on one or two characters only.
• In your essay, you should use vocabulary and content that you learned from the readings. When you use a
culture term, you should underline it to illustrate that you are intentionally using knowledge gained in this
course. When referring to “health,” consider not only physical health, but mental and spiritual health as well.
• You should also conduct some additional research about the culture represented in the film and incorporate
information found in that research about the cultural practices depicted in the film. APA citations (in-text and
reference page) are required.
