Discuss a scenario (your experience if possible) when an attempt to control health problems was implemented. Be sure to focus on the health of a community, rather than the individual patients.
During the COVID-19 pandemic there were various different controls implemented to control the spread of disease and infection. It was emphasized to the community to “Stop the spread, flatten the curve”. I live in New York and everything shut down for two weeks. All nonessential businesses, there was a curfew in place, a mask mandate and various protocols at healthcare facilities that followed state guidelines which were in accordance to CDC guidelines. Healthcare workers had to wear specific personal protective equipment and after doffing the PPE, preventing contamination following proper disinfection between donning a new set of protective equipment to mitigate infection of other patients being treated. The community was educated to not participate in community gatherings, make trips to stores for essentials and maintain a safe 6 foot distance to mitigate the transmission. Nursing homes had shut down and become COVID-19 hotspots, Hospitals stopped allowing visitors. Public Health educated the community on proper hand hygiene, appropriate surgical masks, and instructions on how to self quarantine for 14 days, which was later updated to 5 days. The state of New York tracked all COVID-19 transmissions and the department of health followed up with every patient, ensuring the community had the appropriate resources.

How are rapid needs assessments used during disasters and emergencies?
”RNA’s determine what resources are necessary to conduct life-saving and life-sustaining operations during the emergency response phase of a disaster.” They figure out the extent of damage, areas affected, population percentage affected, identify all risks to safety, life and health. RNA’s also coordinate lifeline services. There is a immediate needs assessment (INA) that identifies what resources are needed, when it is needed, the quantity and duration of resources needed. RNA determines the medical needs of victims, functional treatment facility locations with the capabilities to treat. Information for medical supplies and equipment. They also assist in mass care by distributing relief supplies, shelter information and food requirements and capabilities for the community. RNA team examines fire, search and rescue in fire suppression, search and rescue, mutual aid contracts and capabilities, and maintain a status on responding emergency services. During a HAZAMAT situation, they determine the effects and potential side effect of the material released on a general population and identify areas that are unsafe with hazardous materials secondary to a natural disaster, an example would be after a hurricane and a damaged chemical plant. Or an oil spill due to a natural disaster.”
