Executive Orders and The Presidency

QUESTION 1:

1. What is the title of the executive order, when was it signed, and by which the President?

2. By using the executive order itself and one other source, explain the premise of the executive order. Note: I’m asking students to use another source to help you with your understanding of the executive order. Reading any type of government documents can be overly technical so learning to use both the actual work and secondary sources, this can lead to a better understanding of, in this case, the executive order itself.

There is no need for in-text citations for the Executive order but you will need to have them for the additional source you use. Executive orders are mostly referenced using footnotes – but that is more advanced than this course! Just wanted everyone to understand the why!

Place both sources in MLA formatting at the end of your summary. Please do NOT worry about the spacing or indentations because I’m asking you to do this in the text box.

Citing Executive orders can be challenging

For this question cite the Executive order the following way: the number, the Federal Register Number (the FR ), and the year it was signed. Go to the following link: https://www.federalregister.gov/presidential-documents/executive-orders/barack-obama/2009

If I was going to use the first executive order on that page the “Establishing Federal Capability for the Timely Provision of Medical Countermeasures Following a Biological Attack” the formatting would look like this:

Exec. Order. No. 13,527, 75 Fed. Reg. 737 (Dec. 30, 2009).

QUESTION 2:

In this section, explain why you agree with the executive order. You can agree with it fully or in part — that’s up to you. For your answer, you will need to use 2 sources to further buttress your reasoning or rationale for what you support and your response should be 2 paragraphs in length.

Students may use “I” however, avoid writing statements like “I feel” or, “I think” – Use the appropriate in-text citations and place sources in MLA formatting at the end of your response. Please do NOT worry about the spacing or indentations because I’m asking you to do this in the text box.
