Lecture:

The second-largest hip-hop industry after the United States is in France, and it is built upon the African immigrant experience combined with great influences from Black consciousness movements in the US. This week we will analyze the multiple critiques of French society, so-called assimilationist policies, and current events in order to understand the important role that hip-hop played and continues to play in French society at large.

Religion plays a big part in all nations and in North Africa in particular. This week we will analyze how hip-hop culture provides a platform for both the promotion of and the critique of religion in Morocco.
