Colonial Expansions

Assignment content: one of the connecting themes in this course is colonial/imperial expansion: how kingdoms, empires and nations sought to push pass their borders and take control, directly or indirectly, over other regions of the world. These efforts had often catastrophic long terms effects, including the collapse of kingdoms and societies, establishment of translantic Slave trade in other systems of subjugation, the rapid spread of disease, and the installation of structures of inequality that still shape the present day world

Select two examples from
colonial/expansions

1) for each example, explain how one area came to control the other and what that control looked like. What countries were involved? Was control established through military action, through diplomacy, through economic pressure, through cultural control?

2) What did control look like? Did the colonizing area topple the previous government and establish their own or did they build off existing systems and structures? Were colonized people considered equals and did they have rights? how do colonized people feel about the new situation?

3)
How strong was the colonizers control over the new area? Are there challenges to the authority? Does it look like it can withstand threats from outside (other potential colonizers) and inside(challenges from colonized people)?
