Prepare a 1200-1500 word research-based essay that argues either AGAINST or IN FAVOR OF [insert controversial issue from the Suggested Topics link above]. Do not write on abortion, gun control, or legalization of marijuana, nor the death penalty.
Your purpose is to persuade your audience to agree with your thesis/claim.
Your argument must do the following to receive a high score:
1. Acknowledge 4-6 points or ideas from the “opposing” viewpoint.
2. Refute all the points or ideas acknowledged as being from the “opposing” viewpoint.
3. Use any combination of 2, or more, rhetorical modes to make your point, including: compare and contrast, exemplification, anecdote, description
4. Reference factual information from credible sources from one or more of the following:
· college or academic databases
· government web sites
· common and appropriate professional magazines
· facts-based news channels
· interviews from credible and relevant subjects
· other related and accredited organization web sites (as approved by the instructor).
· Use a variety of relevant and supportive information, including: short direct quotes, brief anecdote, statistics, relevant and credible facts, etc.
