a.)The changing meaning of words is discussed in the Ottenheimer book. Choose your own example of a word (NOT mentioned in the book) and describe how its meaning has changed over time. (Hint: Think of words used by different generations. Are there words you use that had different meanings during the time when your parents or grandparents were growing up?)
b) Ottenheimer describes how newly formed words enter our vocabulary. They are usually based on words that we are already familiar with. For example, “blog” comes from “web” plus “log.” More recently, words such as “doomscrolling” and “quiet quitting” have become part of our vocabulary. Choose your own example of a new word that has entered our vocabulary (NOT from the book or my examples in this discussion) and describe how it is used in cultural context. For example, the Covid-19 pandemic has created a need for new words to come into use. The term “pandemic fatigue” was not widely used in casual conversation before the Covid-19 pandemic occurred. The recent pandemic is just one context in which many new words are formed out of necessity.
Please answer the questions above as thoroughly as possible with a minimum of 100 words.
