In your response, be sure to describe the major concepts iden-tified in
the question, drawing on material from class lectures, course
readings, and in-class discussions.

1.Just War Theory and the Responsibility to Protect: Advocates of Just War Theory and those that
support the notion of a Responsibility to Protect (R2P) share many of the same goals, and the
concepts and theories contain many similarities. Despite the similarities, however, crucial distinc-
tions remain. Discuss the similarities and differences
between Just War Theory and R2P. How
might a proponent of Just War Theory differ from an advocate of R2P in reacting to human rights
abuses in another country? How might adherence to either the Just War Tradition or R2P affect
how a state decides to use force in the international system?

2. The ICC and Intractable Conflict: Intractable conflicts are often long-running, and often involve

violent conflict up to and including crimes against humanity and genocide. The International Crim-

inal Court (ICC) is an international legal body tasked with trying individuals charged with war

crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide, and the crime of aggression, so that individuals that

commit these crimes cannot do so with impunity. Provide a discussion of the primary features of

intractable conflicts, and a discussion of the ICC’s goals, procedures, and aims. In your view, how

might the ICC’s involvement affect situations of intractable conflict? Could the ICC help facilitate

conflict resolution by formally charging individuals responsible for the worst crimes, or might ICC

involvement causes conflicting groups to double-down and continue the conflict?
