Evaluation Essay

Objective
To craft an evaluation review of an item, product, song, performance, or some other subject or body of work.

Assignment
An evaluation essay or report is a type of argument that provides evidence to justify a writer’s opinions about a subject. You should think about what specific criteria is necessary for this subject then base your evaluation around those criteria. For example, why the new iPhone is the best smartphone. What makes a smartphone the best? Is it cost, camera quality, storage, etc.? If the evaluation essay is to be successful you must back up your viewpoints using evidence. This evidence will come in the form of personal examples and maybe outside research.

“Any kind of review is essentially a piece of evaluative writing,” says Allen S. Goose. “This type of writing calls for the critical thinking skills of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation” (8 Kinds of Writing, 2001).
