Stratification Discussion

Hi Class,
Most of us like to believe that everyone has an equal chance at success. Our hard work and talents determine our social rank. However, from a sociological perspective, we we are interested in systemic inequalities based on group membership, classes, etc. In most societies stratification is an economic system. However consider “social standings” based on cultural attitudes and beliefs, parents’ position, occupations and their value as the basis for income.

Federal Reserve data indicates that as of Q4 2021, the top 1% of households in the United States held 32.3% of the country’s wealth, while the bottom 50% held 2.6%. In recent decades, wealth inequality has substantially increased in the United States.
