Find a a preliminary hearing no older than July 2022. Students should spend at least four hours observing preliminary hearings. Pay particular attention to officers’ testimony and judicial inquiry as they relate to the constitutional issues that form the basis of the course. If prosecution and/or defense attorneys are present, observe their interplay with regards to constitutional issues as well. In the paper, describe what you observed, particularly identifying the court and judge by proper name. The paper should include no less than three specifically described observations touching on different constitutional law and matching relevant caselaw using proper case citation formatting. Analysis of law enforcement officers’ adherence or failure to follow constitutional law and the court’s reaction to same is required, a simple recital of what was observed is insufficient. Be specific and explain in detail, vague generalizations are not acceptable. Include the officer’s name and agency, as well as the judge’s name, jurisdiction and court name.
