What are the best, easiest ways to become informed about events and issues that affect us all as citizens of the United States? How much “news” that we consume is designed to evoke emotional responses from us rather than really inform us as citizens? If the news media tells us what issues are important in the world, do you think the sources most people pay attention to are doing a good job of that?

Now that you have followed the day’s events from three different news sources, compare them. You don’t need to summarize the coverage in each source—I’ll have your notes. Analyze what is similar and different about them, and make an argument about th sources’ effectiveness as a news source. Which gave you more information that might affect your views of the government, or the issues or problems that it is or perhaps should be addressing? What were the differences in the depth of coverage? What impact did visual images/headlines/reporters have on your perception of these stories? How else would you compare them? What are the major differences between commercial and non-commercial sources? If you followed the news in two different media (i.e., radio and tv, print and the internet), how do you think the delivery system affected the quality of the news you consumed? Which is more fun to consume? Which would you be most likely to consume?
