For this assignment you will be analyzing “I’m a Conservative Professor Who Opposed Safe Spaces. I was Wrong.”
The difference between this essay and the last essay is that you will be specifically working with the three major appeals –ethos, logos, and pathos AND your analysis will be informed by the argument made in the other essay (the one you are not analyzing directly), as well as the assigned news article “The Silenced Students in the Free Speech Debate.”
Your essay will need to show your understanding of these outside ideas, ideally by citing direct text from one or both of the other readings, as well as informing your evaluation of the effectiveness of the text you are analyzing.
Write an essay which analyzes and evaluates the effectiveness of the author’s rhetorical choices, including appeals to ethos, pathos, and logos for the intended audience, informed by your awareness of opposing arguments. At the end, share your own response to the argument.
Successful papers will:
Give the reader background on the overall issue and why the writers have entered into the conversation
Use an abundance of direct text to support your analysis
Show how the rhetorical appeals are developed through the text overall.
Provide solid support for your evaluation of the effectiveness of the rhetorical choices.
Have a “so what” which is solidified in the concluding paragraph(s)
