Overview:
This assignment will allow you to explore a topic in the chapters we’ve read from Julie Otsuka’s book When the Emperor Was Divine. You will identify a topic and then explain what the book has to say about that topic, supporting your points with ample textual evidence (close reading of details, imagery, passages, and scenes from the book).
Thesis:
A thesis is what you think a book says about an issue or topic. For example, if “sex” is a topic in a book, then “The book argues that sexual desire is really a desire for emotional acceptance” could be your thesis. Reasonable people can argue about or disagree with this thesis – in other words, you have to make your case for why your idea is true (this is why a thesis statement is often called an argument).
For such a short essay, you will need to pay special attention to narrowing your thesis. For example, the sentence “Family is important” is much too broad and vague to make a good thesis. The sentence “Family kinship is more important in the book than individual desire” is a narrower and more specific thesis.
Requirements:
The essay needs to be three to four pages double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 inch Font or Calibri 11. You will need to correctly cite and/or paraphrase passages from the text in correct MLA format.
