To complete this reflection, you should locate the following article via the library’s databases: Emerging Adulthood: A theory of development from the late teens through the twenties. It is written by Jeffrey Jensen Arnett.
The best way to locate the article is to go to the University website, choose Library Resources, Choose “Find Articles and Databases”, Databases A – Z, then find “PsychArticles” and choose it. Then, in the search field Jeffrey Jensen Arnett, then change drop down “in” to “author”. Last, hit search. Then click on the article title listed above and open up the PDF full text.
Read the article thoroughly and for the assignment, you should construct a 3-page double spaced, 12-point font review/analysis of the article addressing the following issues:
What is emerging adulthood?
What changes have led to this new developmental period (18 – 25)?
The author discusses research with emerging adults where most answer “in some respects yes and in some respects no” when asked whether they feel they have reached adulthood. How would you answer this question? What criteria do you use in determining whether someone has reached adult status? Using the research provided in the article, what criteria do most young people use in determining whether a person has reached adult status?
The article discusses parenthood and the possibility of parenthood changing the experience for someone in “emerging adulthood” – how would you respond to that? Are those 18 – 25 year olds with children experiencing the period of “emerging adulthood” differently than those without children? If so, in what ways? If not, why not?
The author discusses three areas of identity exploration: love, work, and worldviews and he argues that most identity exploration takes place during emerging adulthood (and not in adolescence). What do you think? In those three specific areas, is identity exploration greater in adolescence or emerging adulthood? What are you basing your opinion on?
