We are beginning our projects to support the city of Hayward with its update to its Climate Action Plan. We will be writing a series of small essays that we will eventually combine into a much longer essay. As you’re working on this project, you’ll need to keep two running documents — a definitions page that lists all of the key terms you’re using throughout your project in alphabetical order and a works cited page in MLA format.
Create a folder on your desktop or on your Google Drive account to store all of your writing, research, and photos for your project. You’re are going to be writing and researching a lot, so you’ll want to have all of your materials organized and easily accessible.
Create your Definitions Page and add it to your folder. Your definitions page will list and define all of the key terms you use throughout your project. For example, mitigation, adaptation, tipping points, 1.5°C, Anthropocene, etc., etc. As you work on your project, you’ll be referring to specific climate-related terms. You’ll need to keep track of those terms on your Definitions page. You can pull definitions from the IPCC Glossary: https://www.ipcc.ch/sr15/chapter/glossary/Links to an external site. You will not be turning in your definitions page until the very end of the project. But start it now.
Create your Works Cited page and add it to your folder. Throughout this project, you will be conducting a lot of research. It’s always a good idea to keep track of your research in a single space so that you can refer to it later. You will need to cite every source you use in proper MLA format including the sources we’ve used in this class. You will not be turning in your works cited page until the very end of the project. But start it now.
Complete Writing Assignment #4: Climate Action Plans if you haven’t done so already. You will be developing your responses into a mini essay.
Respond to the Mini Essay #1 Questions. Your responses to each question should be a minimum of one page in length, and they should be treated as body paragraphs. You must include:
Quotations from any of the sources we’ve worked with so far
Images (when you’re finding images, you’ll need to include a caption as well as a citation for that image)
Analysis and Commentary
Keep in mind I am not your audience for this project. Your project proposals will be shared with and read by Hayward staff and council.
Submit your completed paragraphs as a single doc to this assignment page for grading and comments.
Write paragraphs that respond to each of the questions. Within each question are subquestions that you must include in your paragraphs.
Introduction
Describe the work we’re doing with the city of Hayward. Literally, what is this class doing and what are we building off of?
Background on the Climate Crisis
Describe the climate crisis at large
Pull from our materials from Unit 1 (think about 1.5°C, tipping points, 8 years, etc.)
You could even include information about the basic science of climate change. Go back to our earliest videos and podcasts.
Consider the tone you want to take here. Do you want to scare your readers, present some optimism, etc.
Assessment of climate impacts in California/Bay Area/Hayward
How is climate change impacting our local area?
You could include weather disasters like flooding, wildfires, etc.
You could include environmental justice topics
Refer to Reading Assignment #15: California Climate Impact Assessment and Reading Assignment #16: Climate Impacts in the Bay Area
You are each doing this independently: Keep track of all your key terms and the materials you are drawing from. You literally need to cites every single source you use and define every single key term you include, so keep track of them in your respective docs. Your works cited and definitions pages are unique to your project. They are not to be combined or shared as a group.
